Gliftype is an independent type foundry and open archive for Indonesian libre typography, founded by Sidiq Kamal Nurmawan. It uses the SIL Open Font License to make typography free for everyone. We did not just pop up out of nowhere. The spark behind the project was heavily inspired by the movement of libre typography in France. Their dedication to celebrating experimental aesthetics, resisting capitalist monopolies in design, and their consistency in releasing everything under libre licenses serves as the ultimate compass for us. We wanted to bring that exact same fire and energy into this personal project right from Indonesia.
Gliftype distributes its entire catalog under libre and open-source models, primarily utilizing the global SIL Open Font License (OFL). This framework grants users absolute freedom to utilize the fonts for both personal and commercial projects without paying any licensing fees. Users are fully permitted to modify, expand, or deconstruct the font software to add missing characters or adjust weights.
However, under the OFL rules, you cannot sell the standalone font files by themselves, and any modified or derivative versions must also be released under the exact same open-source license. In addition to the standard open-source framework, Gliftype implements a strict mandatory crediting policy for digital applications. Whenever our typefaces are deployed on public websites or digital media, the user is required to attribute the font name, the original designer, and Gliftype.
Our open collection is designed for everyone, but we know that specific projects require tailored solutions. Hiring us for custom work ensures your layout gets exactly what it needs while fairly compensating our team for their dedicated time. We offer our expertise for commission work under a fair pricing model that respects both your budget and our craft.

We’d love any mentions or credits so that we can help spread the word about our fonts.
The active designer behind Gliftype is Sidiq Kamal Nurmawan, backed up by contributor Erwin Wirianata to distribute, spread the word, and reach out to people who need free fonts whether it’s for creative projects or art exhibitions.
We don’t make money from retail fonts (since everything is totally free), but we do take commissions for custom fonts and other graphic design work.
