The Gliftype Manifesto: Breaking the Mold
1. Typography Belongs in the Wild
Type isn’t meant to sit on a pristine pedestal or be locked inside corporate style guides. It’s meant to be seen on sticker-bombed street signs, bold protest banners, weird personal blogs, brutalist web layouts, and experimental zines. When type is expensive, people hesitate to experiment. By making our fonts completely free, we want to kill that hesitation. If you have an idea, you should have the typographic tools to bring it to life right now, regardless of your bank account.
2. Open-Source is the Ultimate Collaboration
We don’t just want you to use our fonts; we want you to make them your own. All of our typefaces are released under open licenses (like the SIL Open Font License). That means you can use them freely in commercial and personal work, modify the source files, build upon them, and share them forward. Typography has always evolved through borrowing, adapting, and remixing. Why should digital type be any different? We want to foster a culture where design is a shared conversation, not a closed proprietary loop.
3. “Free” Doesn’t Mean “Rushed”
Let’s get one thing straight: just because our fonts don’t cost money doesn’t mean we threw them together in five minutes. Every single family we put out—whether it’s a high-contrast display serif, a retro condensed sans, or a wild variable font spanning from Thin to Black—is crafted with obsessive precision. We spend countless hours cleaning up paths, fine-tuning sidebearings, setting up smart OpenType features, and building smooth variable axes so they perform seamlessly across modern design software and web browsers. You get pro-level quality without the corporate tax.
4. A Little Creative Rebellion
The traditional type industry is heavily built on scarcity, licensing red tape, and artificial restrictions. Gliftype is our small, stubborn pushback against that model. We’re exploring alternative, ethical ways to sustain independent type design without resorting to paywalls or gatekeeping. We want to prove that you can run a foundry that prioritizes community, accessibility, and open collaboration over corporate hoarding.
This Is a Workshop, Not a Storefront
Think of this website as an open-door workshop rather than a digital boutique. There are no checkout counters here, no annoying license tiers to decode, and no hidden fine print. Just grab the files, load them into your design tools or code editor, break them, push them to their limits, and make something amazing. The digital landscape should be shaped by the people who use it, not just the ones who can afford it. Dive into our library, grab a font, and let’s make some cool stuff together.
